This action plan continues the measures of the LIFE Eislek project, completed in 2018, for the protection and restoration of the habitats of the violet copper.
The violet copper is an endangered butterfly species that lives in the wet meadows of the Luxembourg Ardennes (Oesling). Its distribution is tied to the presence of common bistort (Polygonum bistorta), which is the sole plant consumed by the species' caterpillars. Many wetland biotopes have been degraded or have disappeared, which explains the scarcity of this glacial relic butterfly.
Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur is committed to the conservation and restoration of wet meadows in open landscapes. Thus, various concrete measures such as mowing and clearing brush on suitable areas, planting windbreaks, rotational grazing, and installing fences are carried out on the foundation's land to preserve and even expand habitats suited for the violet copper.
