Luxembourg's last wild cats are losing ground.
For centuries, the mystery surrounding the European forest cat (Felis silvestris silvestris), also known as the wildcat, has captivated nature lovers. This discreet cat lives in our forests, meadows and clearings. Mainly observed in the region between the Ernst and Syr valleys, it was spotted in the Groheck nature reserve near Biwer.
Resembling its domestic counterpart only more imposing, the wildcat boasts a robust build, a bushy tail and a fawn/grey coat streaked with black stripes. A true forest predator, the wildcat regulates populations of small mammals, birds and even reptiles, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem.
Along the River Biwerbaach and its reach to the Marxmillen mill, in a landscape marked by rock formations and ancient stone terraces, the Groheck nature reserve is well known to birdwatchers for its numerous bird species (Dipper, Wagtail, Black Flycatcher, Black Tit and Garden Creeper). The nature reserve, essentially a mixed deciduous forest (maple, oak, hornbeam), flowered with orchids, and bordered by an orchard and hedgerows, is home to a rich and diverse ecosystem, providing an ideal refuge and hunting ground for wildcats.
Yet the species is threatened!
Since 2019, over85% of trees in Luxembourg's forests have been damaged. Human activity and the lack of ecological corridors are threatening the feline's equilibrium and fragmenting its habitat. Roads, urban areas and farmland form obstacles that hinder the species' mobility from one natural environment to another, slowly leading to its loss.
We urgently need to take action to protect this fascinating and mysterious species!
