Official Plantation - Nationalen Dag vum Bam

Luxembourg - November 13, 2025 - National Tree Day 2025

Planting for the future with the Hëllef fir d'Natur Foundation

Under the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity, the Hëllef fir d’Natur Foundation is launching its major annual planting campaign on Thursday, November 13, 2025, as part of National Tree Day (JNA).

This year's event will be held in Hollenfels, on land owned by the Hëllef fir d'Natur Foundation, in the presence of Mr. Patrick Losch, President of the Hëllef fir d'Natur Foundation, Mr. Paul Mangen, Mayor of the Municipality of Helperknapp, Mr. Serge Wilmes, Minister for the Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity, and Mr. Michel Leytem, Director of the Nature and Forest Administration.

A simple gesture for a sustainable future.

Initiated by the Foundation in 1992, National Tree Day marks the start of the planting season each year and launches a fundraising campaign to raise awareness of the ecological, climatic, and landscape value of trees and hedges. It encourages municipalities, associations, businesses, and citizens to plant, maintain, and protect these true allies of the climate.

In Luxembourg, where forests cover 35% of the territory and traditional hedgerows still structure 15% of agricultural plots, every tree planted helps to slow erosion, promote biodiversity, purify the air, retain water, and moderate the local climate.

Forests, orchards, and hedgerows are essential ecosystems: their roots stabilize the soil, provide shelter for abundant underground life, filter rainwater, and create natural microclimates, which are essential during periods of extreme heat.

Hollenfels: a symbolic collective planting

During the official ceremony, around twenty trees of different species (chestnut, apple, cherry, plum, walnut, wild pear, field maple, maple, and linden) will be planted. Pupils in cycle 3 at the primary school in the municipality of Helperknapp will play an active role by planting 70 meters of hedgerows on the same site. These plantings will help to strengthen the local green network, provide habitats for wildlife, and connect the surrounding forest ecosystems.

The state of our forests remains a cause for concern: according to the ANF's 2023 phytosanitary inventory, more than half of all trees show signs of deterioration. In light of this, planting trees remains one of the most powerful and accessible ways to combat climate change and restore the ecological resilience of our landscapes.

For more than 40 years, the Hëllef fir d’Natur Foundation has been working to protect nature in Luxembourg, managing more than 2,000 hectares of nature reserves and preserving 84 priority sites. Its forest restoration, standard orchard, and ecological corridor projects help to safeguard local species and preserve the beauty of Luxembourg's rural heritage.

Every tree counts, and so does every donation

For the official National Tree Day on Saturday, November 15, 2025, more than 40 municipalities, associations, and companies will organize their own activities, which are listed in the special National Tree Day edition of Regulus, the natur&ëmwelt magazine, available at www.naturemwelt.lu.

Those who are unable to plant can support the Foundation's projects by making a donation towards the restoration of forests, hedgerows, and traditional orchards. Every contribution helps to plant for the future, protect biodiversity, and build a greener and more resilient Luxembourg.
